On Sunday, April 12, MAA will meet at the Westminster Senior Center, 69 West Main Street, Westminster, MA, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. This month, we have a featured speaker giving a presentation on effective communication for farmers.
“Putting Your Best Boot Forward without a Long Story: Introducing Your Farm to Others”
by Lucy McKain, The Herb Hill Farm, Pepperell, MA
Putting a face to the farm and telling your story is the strongest asset you have as a farmer. But how do you give just the right amount of information without saying too much or too little? How do you prompt visitors to buy and return? How do you refine what you say to different people? Giving need-to-know vs nice-to-know information is one key method.
In this workshop, we’ll explore ways to speak authentically and succinctly about your farm as you welcome visitors and tell what you have to offer with just the right amount of information. You will leave with a polished, ready-to-use handout tailored to you -one you can adapt for different audiences so you can confidently step into your story and put your best boot forward.
As the season approaches for farm stands and farmers’ markets, it can be useful to have some ideas about what to say to people who visit your farm, stand or table. You can also apply these skills when talking to officials and legislators about farming and agriculture, and people who ask you about your farm and what you do in other settings.
